Lying on an inlet of the Baltic Sea known as the Baltic Fjord, the Port of Kiel (Kieler Hafen) is located at the eastern end of the Kiel Canal. Kiel Canal is the biggest man made waterway in the world. And Kieler Hafen is one of Germany’s most important maritime nucleus. A base of the German Navy, it is also the center of a state-of-the-art ship-building industry. And because of its strategic location, Kieler Hafen is one of the major ports of call for cruise-ferries from Norway, Sweden, Lithuania and Russia. The Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) which is world’s biggest sailing regatta is held here every year. The Port of Kiel also hosted the swimming competitions of Olympic Games in 1936 and 1972. The Ostseekai is Port of Kiel’s main cruise terminal. It serves the Norwegian Color Line cruise ferries – Color Fantasy and Color Magic. Both cruise liners are deployed at the Oslo-Kiel route with daily crossings via the Skagerrak and Kattegat Straits of the Baltic Fjord.
